The Client

Forthright Medical is a specialty healthcare practice serving patients across the Phoenix metro area. They needed a digital presence that matched the quality of their clinical care, and a system for managing patient inquiries that gave them complete control over their data.

The Challenge

The practice was relying on a third-party SaaS platform to handle patient intake and data collection — costing over $600/month for functionality that only partially fit their workflow. Data lived on someone else's servers, exports were cumbersome, and the interface felt generic compared to the care they delivered.

Goals
  • Replace the SaaS subscription with a self-hosted, custom-built system
  • Keep all patient inquiry data on the practice's own servers
  • Build a content-managed website that staff could update without a developer
  • Create a fast, trust-building online presence that converted visitors into appointments
  • Design with HIPAA-conscious data handling throughout
Process

How we built it.

The project started with a full discovery of their workflow — how patients found them, what questions they asked before booking, and how intake data was used internally. Everything was mapped before a single design was made.

The website was built from scratch in custom PHP, with no CMS platform dependencies. A lightweight content management layer was added specifically for the sections staff would update regularly — doctor bios, service pages, and announcements — without exposing them to code.

The patient intake system was built as a custom MySQL database with a secure admin dashboard. All data is stored on the practice's own server. No third-party APIs receive the data. The system handles form submissions, stores inquiries, flags incomplete forms, and exports to CSV for import into their practice management software.

Typography, spacing, and photography direction were all calibrated to signal trust — the specific visual language that makes a patient feel confident choosing a healthcare provider.

Outcomes

What changed.

The practice eliminated their SaaS subscription on the first month after launch. All patient data now lives on their own infrastructure. Staff can update content independently. The site loads in under 1.5 seconds on mobile and ranks for local healthcare searches that matter to their patient acquisition.

York's Take
"Healthcare projects have a design problem that most agencies don't acknowledge: the visual language of trust in medical contexts is very specific, and getting it wrong can cost a practice real patients. I spent a lot of time on the typography and spacing here — things that are invisible when done right. The database architecture was the part I was most proud of. Simple, auditable, and entirely theirs."
